I love it! They would make a great painting project for younger children or are simply a fun excuse for crafty adults to create fresh, new holiday decor.
Nothing's more refreshing than a change in seasons. With mid-September comes cool nights, cozy scarves, changing leaves and (my favorite) apple picking.

Paul and I missed out on our annual trip to Melick's last year, so we made sure to fit it in to our schedules as soon this September rolled around. We spent the past weekend picking a variety of apples and perusing the vast selection of pumpkins and gourds.

With the abundance of apples we picked, it looks like I'll be eating nothing but goat cheese & apple sandwiches for lunch everyday (no complaints here!).
I was honored to be a bridesmaid in the wedding and stand by Mandy's side as she said "I do" to the love of her life.

The ceremony and reception took place at The Garrison in New York, which is nestled in the Hudson Highlands with breathtaking views of the Hudson river. One of the things that really stood out to me, other than the scenery and beautiful bride, were the floral arrangements. I'm having a hard time attempting to describe the flowers so I'll go with two words: rustic and eclectic. See for yourself how pretty they were:
It's a trend I've been noticing more in interior design, but not something I'd thought of doing before. After seeing multiple examples of the layered rug technique, I'm starting to warm up to the idea. After all, its a great way to save some money - buy a cheap, plain 8x10 and layer it with a small, patterned, quality-made rug. Two different rugs can also make a space feel cozier and more eclectic.

So, what are your thoughts on layering rugs? Is it a do or a don't?
I have some exciting news to share. I've put aside some major craft projects lately in favor of a gig as a spokesperson for a new book called True Blondes. My co-blonde, Ashley, and I have been busy sharing summer hair, makeup and fashion tips. We're excited for our upcoming feature in the August edition of Vocab Magazine. Here's a sneak peek at what we're working on:
And if you're looking for a fun, summer beach read, I definitely suggest picking up a copy of True Blondes written by award-winning author Carol Hollenbeck.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-707320584998154234.post-51382372519724672582012-07-17T13:38:00.000-04:002012-07-17T13:38:04.966-04:00Review: Warby ParkerGlasses are cool. No, really. Take a walk around Brooklyn and you'll see all the hipsters wearing them... even if they have 20/20 vision. I, unfortunately, was not blessed with perfect vision and have been wearing nerd spectacles since 2nd grade (I still remember my first pair... they were purple). Even though I converted to contact lenses my senior year of high school, I still sport my specs on occasion.

The last time I purchased eyeglasses was over 6 years ago, so I was definitely due for an update. As my fellow brethren of hindered eyesight would most likely agree, picking out a new pair of glasses in a store can be torture. Wouldn't it be nice to try on frames within the comfort of your own home (sans pesky salesperson), demo them for a few days and gather consensus from friends and family on which pair suits you best?

(Cue super hero music) Warby Parker home try-on program to the rescue!

Here are the deets:

Choose 5 pairs of eyeglasses on the WP website

Warby Parker ships the sample frames to you

Try them out for 5 days

Ship everything back w/ pre-paid return label

IT'S 100% FREE

Free... yes, free! And you aren't obligated to purchase any of the frame styles you try on. Even better, if you do decide you love the frames, you can order them for $95, which includes the prescription lenses and free shipping/returns.

Clockwise from top left: Sims, Huxley, Leigh, Zagg, Finn

For me, it was a toss up between the Sims, Leigh and Finn. In an attempt to look stylish, I ultimately decided on the Sims in burgundy fade. Warby Parker's ordering process was seamless and I received my new prescription glasses within 8 days!

(And I'm in denial summer is flying by so quickly). That being said, I'm excited for the patriotic craftiness that surrounds this holiday. Ah, yes, love is in the air and summer wedding season is in full force. This past weekend, I had the joy of attending the wedding of my two friends, Brian and Jess. The reception and ceremony took place outside at an open field in Pennsylvania. The weather was perfectly sunny and warm.

The alter at the ceremony was handmade out of wood by Jess and her father (very crafty, indeed!). The guests were seated on hay bales and watched as the wedding party entered the aisle through two freestanding doors.

As for the reception, it was country-chic perfection. The tables were adorned with wheat grass centerpieces, flowers in mix-n-match bottles and tiny potted herbs for each guest to take home as a wedding favor. My favorite piece of decor was the bride and groom's table. Wooden blocks letters spelled "love" and rested on vintage wooden crates. The entire setting for the wedding was charming and romantic.

We went on Ladies Night, which offers 50% off the studio fee and BYOB (we brought a bottle of wine to split). Upon arrival, we were greeted by smiling faces who helped us pick our pieces and paint colors. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful.

Liz and I both chose to paint cereal bowls (Liz also painted a carrot magnet, which she fawned over the entire time). We were each allotted six paint colors to begin with and I chose a mix of blues, yellows and greens. I originally wanted to stamp a cityscape around the outside of the bowl, but the stamp ended up being rather difficult to use. I'm not sure if it was the half bottle of wine I drank or the fact that Easter had just passed, but I ended up painting a bowl that looked like an Easter egg.

When I picked up my "masterpiece" a couple weeks after my original visit, I was relieved to see the colors had darkened quite a bit. I'm still not totally thrilled with my design, but it was a fun experience overall.
While I'm more of a lake person than a beach-goer, I love to see nautical decor pretty much anytime and anywhere.

Back in 2010, I posted a photo of a gorgeous tablescape created with Thomas Paul dinnerware. The plates were a bit too expensive for my budget, so I opted to covet the tablescape instead of recreate it. Recently, however, I came across the Timber Cove line on World Market, which is affordably stylish. Sorry I've been missing in action the past couple weeks... life is busy and finding time to craft n' blog is tough! Hang tight though - I'll be back soon (promise!).Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-707320584998154234.post-85246496843782989942012-04-18T15:43:00.000-04:002012-04-18T15:43:01.193-04:00Earth Week: from trash to treasureHappy Earth Week (it's the week leading up to Earth Day on April 22, in case you weren't aware)! As you know by now, I love repurposing and upcyling old goods. I've seen quite a few crafters turn old bottles into attractive wares simply by spray painting them, which is a relatively easy DIY project.

When I was perusing the lovely items on Leif Shop, I had to do a double-take on their bottle vases (featured below). I thought they were simply reselling painted bottles, but I took a closer look at the description and read the following: "To create this series of bottle vases, trash was taken from the streets of Holland and cast in naturally colored, pastel porcelain - challenging what we consider beautiful."

Cast in porcelain? Cool! It's new and different ideas like this that inspire me to keep crafting. So tell me, what inspires you this Earth Week 2012?
I recently recruited my friend Karley to join me at Mosaic Night at Baked in Brooklyn. We enjoyed 2 hours of drinking wine and being artsy with other local ladies.

It was my first time building a mosaic so I didn't really know what to expect. Overall, it was a fairly easy project. The only frustration we endured was settling on our final mosaic layouts after futzing with a million different design options (what can I say, we're perfectionists).

The process went a little something like this:

Choose your picture frame and an array of tile/glass pieces.

Mull over design ideas and try out different options until you finally come up with a creation you love.

Remove all the pieces from the aforementioned design on the frame and glue them back on.

Let dry for 24 hours and grout the mosaic at home (we were given grout goody bags when we left the studio).

Let the grout dry for over 3 hrs. Wipe the frame clean of any grout left on the tiles.

Find a pretty picture to fill the frame and showcase it in your apartment. Ta da!

They aren't the stodgy, mom-please-don't-make-me-go fairs that haunted your childhood. They are cool, hip and fun. Thus, the purpose of Jersey City's Not Yo Mama's Craft Fair! Despite wanting to attend a few of the past Not Yo Mama's events, I always seemed to be out of town whenever they took place.

Luckily, I planned ahead this time and cleared my schedule for the Not Yo Mama's Fool's Fair this past Sunday, April 1. It was held at LITM, a local JC restaurant, which is a fairly small venue, but was jam packed with artisans.

I was in the mood to spend some moolah so I bought an intricately detailed silver bracelet for my mom's birthday and an adorable baby bib as a gift for my friend who recently gave birth to her first child. Here are some snap shots of some of my favorite vendors there:
In an attempt to prolong my dog's life by 100+ years (What? I want him to live for-ev-er), I feed him packaged chow made with wholesome, pure ingredients.

While I don't foresee myself becoming my pup's full-time personal chef anytime soon, I did decide to try my hand at making homemade dog biscuits. Overall, the peanut butter doggy treats I made were rather easy and inexpensive and to top it off, Louie loves them. (Recipe below)

Peanut Butter Doggy Biscuits
Ingredients:
1/2 cup peanut butter
3 cups brown rice flour
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 cup water

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix all ingredients in med-size mixing bowl until well blended. Add extra water if needed. Either drop by rounded spoonfuls onto cookie sheets OR roll dough onto mat (use extra flour if dough is too sticky to roll) and use cookie cutters to make bones or other fun shapes. Bake 20-30 min depending on size/thickness.

They make great gifts..

..and taste delicious!
Cake pops are all the rage and are taking over as the must-have trendy sweet treat. And who can blame them? They're cute, bite-sized and conveniently on a stick. Speaking of cute, my friend Brittney created adorable cake pops for her daughters Sesame Street themed birthday party. I'm sure it was a laborious process but they turned out so well. Now these cake pop photos have me brainstorming ideas for making Cookie Monster cookie pops (nom nom!).
"What is Package Pals?" you may ask. Basically, each participant is paired up with a crafty counterpart and you send each other crafty care packages. Fun!

I was paired up with Loy who is a food blogger over at From Grandma Loy's Kitchen. While she jokes about not being a home decor blogger, she is quite talented at sewing! I was beyond delighted with my crafty package, which contained coasters, tea towels, hot pads and an eco-tote. Each item featured a beautiful bird fabric (and we all know how much I adore birds). I can't thank Loy enough for being a great package pal.

In return, I sent Loy some of my book page crafts - a strand of heart baubles and a hand crafted gift bow. I only wish I would have sent more because she completely spoiled me!
No really, they are. Everytime I finish a bottle of wine (which I swear doesn't happen on too regular of a basis) I save the cork... almost in an OCD kind of way. As a result, I have jars and vases filled to the brim with a variety of corks (hello, hoarder). I keep telling myself that I'll put them to good use and turn them into fun craft projects, but other than my cork-nosed reindeer project from over a year ago, I have yet to get the ball rolling. In an attempt to spark some creativity within my brain, I set out to compile fun uses for corks.
No worries, my friend Danielle sent me a fun and easy personalized gift idea. This do-it-yourself project involves cigars and beer... super manly, right? He's sure to love it!

Personalized Cigar Box
1. Pick up a free cigar box at your local smoke shop.
2. Head to your nearest brew shop and buy a variety of craft beers with cool labels. Note: Beware of Blue Moon, that label was not coming off!
3. Soak the bottles in warm water with baking soda sprinkled in. At least 20 minutes or however long it takes for the labels to peel off easily.
4. Dry the labels between paper towels with a heavy book on top to keep the labels from curling.
5. Paint a thin layer of Mod Podge on the wood and secure the labels on the box one side at a time.
6. Use a razor to trim excess labels where the box opens/hinges.
7. Let the Mod Podge dry for 20 minutes and then paint a layer on top of the labels. Let dry for another 20 minutes and repeat a few more times.
8. Cut pieces of felt to fit the inside of the box and Mod Podge the pieces into the box. Note: Do not Mod Podge the top of the felt.

It's as easy as that! And now you have a cool cigar box and delicious craft beers to drink.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-707320584998154234.post-56239303077679976132012-02-09T17:11:00.000-05:002012-02-09T17:12:00.509-05:00Gettin' crafty with graffitiIt looks like some wise guys are taking it upon themselves to improve the new Mad Men campaign ads.
